What would you do if you had a rich uncle, or won the lottery? We always said we would build a sports complex and use it to run camps, leagues, group and individual lessons, and let the love of sports be the gateway to share the gospel. What we realized is that when God has a plan you don't need a rich uncle.
It started while we were getting the baseball team up and running. We did not understand all the tax laws and everything that is needed to have sponsors. We learned that we had to start our own business, get a tax id, and file for a non profit status. I can remember thinking do I really want to do this?
As we were talking about all the things that needed to be done for the baseball team my son added his input to the team name discussion. Originally the team name was going to be Blue Anchors. My son said maybe we should just be called Anchors. As we discussed that our oldest daughter reminded us that the term anchor is in the Bible as she quoted Hebrews 6:19. Put all that together and we had the name Anchors. Then God made it clear through a simple trip to the beach what we should do next.
Excited to be at the beach we could not wait to hit the sand. Through a conversation with a stranger who was walking by, God revealed to us that we can fulfill the dream and we don't need some big facility. We just need to trust and be faithful to the Lord. It was amazing how clear the message was from God through a complete stranger.
This quickly moved from just the baseball team to what we always wanted to do. We needed to come up with a name to apply for our new business and it was clear. Anchors Sports was born.
